Hopetown Darlington awarded prestigious museum accreditation
1st October 2026
Hopetown Darlington has been awarded full Museum Accreditation, the UK industry standard for museums and galleries, recognising the quality, care and professionalism behind the town's flagship railway heritage attraction.
Administered by Arts Council England on behalf of the UK Accreditation Partnership, Museum Accreditation is the nationally recognised benchmark for well-run museums and galleries. The award confirms that Hopetown Darlington is properly managed and governed to nationally agreed standards, ensuring its collections are protected and preserved for future generations while remaining accessible and engaging for today's audiences.
Emmie Kell, Director Museums and Cultural Property at Arts Council England said: "We’re delighted that Hopetown Darlington has been successful in gaining their accreditation status. This means that their Collections will be looked after and maintained offering inspiration, enjoyment and learning for the local community and visitors to enjoy now and in the future.”
It recognises the dedication, hard work and passion that has gone into developing Hopetown Darlington since opening in July 2024, as well as the work undertaken to care for and share its nationally significant railway heritage collection comprising more than 30,000 objects and records. The achievement follows a detailed assessment process and highlights the progress made at Hopetown, which celebrates Darlington's pivotal role in railway history and inspires new generations through its exhibitions, collections, learning programme and events.
Councillor Libby McCollom, Darlington Borough Council Cabinet Member for Local Services, said: "Achieving Museum Accreditation is a fantastic achievement for Hopetown Darlington and recognition of the incredible hard work, dedication and professionalism of the entire team. Everyone involved should be immensely proud of what they have accomplished. This nationally recognised award not only reflects the high standards being delivered at Hopetown but also showcases Darlington's commitment to preserving and sharing our world-famous railway heritage. It is a significant moment for the town and further strengthens Darlington's reputation as a destination of national importance for cultural heritage and tourism."
Mike Crawshaw, Head of Heritage and Culture at Darlington Borough Council, said: "Museum Accreditation is an important milestone for Hopetown Darlington as we continue to establish the attraction as a must-visit national destination. The railway heritage collection is an important feature of the visitor experience, telling the story of Darlington's world-changing role in railway history and providing a unique connection to the past. This recognition reflects the quality of the collection, and we'd encourage anyone who hasn't yet visited Hopetown to come and discover everything the site has to offer."
Accreditation opens up exciting funding opportunities for Hopetown Darlington, while also enabling the attraction to host touring exhibitions and access professional advice and support for its collection. It also gives confidence to donors and sponsors who may wish to support the museum in preserving heritage and inspiring future generations.
Accreditation covers museums of all types and sizes - from the smallest volunteer-run museums to national museums – and more than 1,700 museums are currently taking part in the scheme across the UK.
Since opening in July 2024, Hopetown Darlington has welcomed more than 410,000 visitors and become one of the region's must-visit attractions.
