About

The Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre is an historic, 175-seat proscenium-arch theatre located at the heart of Durham City.

Situated on North Bailey adjacent to Durham's designated world heritage sight of Durham Castle and Cathedral, entering the Assembly Rooms Theatre is like stepping into another world.  A traditional proscenium arch theatre, the building is filled with history and tradition, updated with brand new modern spaces.  Used for Durham Univeristy theatre and music productions (which are open to the public), professional productions, touring theatre and conferences – the Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre welcomes all.

Opening Hours and Booking Information

For booking enquiries, please feel free to email theatre.manager@durham.ac.uk or come along to the box office in person Monday to Friday 9.30 to 4.00 pm.  Alternatively, book online via our What's On Guide here.

The Box Office and Bar open 30 minutes before shows are due to start, and tickets and refreshments available to purchase.

Group perks and benefits are often available for specific shows, so please get in touch if you are interested in arranging a group visit. Concession prices and discounts for Durham Student Theatre members are also available for the majority of performances, and can be applied to online purchases, or tickets bought in person at the box office. For ticket exchanges or refunds, as well as more information on our performances (including age restrictions or content guidance) please contact the Theatre Manager.

Access

The Theatre aims to ensure its productions are accessible to all.  However, with the historic nature of the theatre building it is advisable to contact the Theatre Manager to ensure your visit runs as smoothly as possible. The theatre has a lift accessible from street level (on request), two wheelchair accessible seats and a fixed induction loop throughout.  Some longer runs will have captioned performances. Guide dogs are welcome in all parts of the theatre.
