About

This cycle route takes you along the minor lanes from Stanhope to Rookhope and Westgate in Weardale, a beautiful rural valley with fascinating heritage and spectacular countryside. There are good pubs and facilities in all the settlements on the route.

From the Durham Dales Centre in Stanhope, ride west along the main road, turning right just after the old toll cottage, signed as a cycle route to Rookhope. Follow this minor road uphill, across the moor edge and downhill to a right turn into Rookhope. Ride through Rookhope, turning left after the arch beyond the village. At the top of the hill, turn left and follow the road downhill to Westgate. Turn left through the village and right just after the Hare and Hounds Inn. Cross the bridge over the River Wear and follow the lane to a T junction. Turn left and follow this route all the way back to the stone bridge at Stanhope, turning left back to the start.

This route passes near to the following Taste Durham establishment: The Durham Dales Centre.

Route provided by the North Pennines National Landscape Partnership.
