About

Durham Climbing Centre is a modern, vibrant venue for rock climbing in Durham City. The Centre has over 6500sq ft of climbing under one roof. Climbing areas are suitable for age 3 years upwards and cater for beginners to very advanced. Spectators and climbers can relax in the comfortable coffee lounge and viewing gallery or have a game of table tennis in between climbing the various challenges on offer.

The style of climbing is 'bouldering' which is free climbing without the need for ropes and harnesses. Boulderers may climb up, across or diagonally on the climbing walls. Climbs are marked out in different colours on the climbing walls with each climb called a 'problem'. Problems are graded according to difficulty and are coloured to indicate easy, medium or difficult problems. Problem solving is involved when completing climbs and deciding where to move next. Strength and endurance training is promoted through short sequences of moves making up a problem.

All the climbing routes in the centre are changed regularly to provide new challenges each time you visit. Climbing is a fun activity for the whole family as well as a great way to keep fit. Peak times are from 16:00 to closing (Mon-Fri and all day on weekends) and off peak is from 10:00 to 16:00 (Mon-Fri).
