Rosmersholm

About

Fresh from their award-nominated fringe festival runs, the Theatre Of Cowards takes on Henrik Ibsen's Rosmersholm at the City Theatre. The Theatre of Cowards brings to life Ibsen's classic play Rosmersholm (trad. R. Sharp), following the tragedy and secrecy of a storied, venerable family in the Norwegian countryside.

The death of Beata Rosmer still echoes through the rooms of a rural country house in Norway, haunting widower John Rosmer and Beata's companion, Rebecca West. In this classic tragedy, both must grapple with their loyalties to the dead and to their own political ideologies as the world changes around them, despite the terrible secret living within the walls...

The result is a psychological whirlpool, chewing up the characters within it and forcing Rosmersholm's troubled past into the light. Directed by Sylvia Gardner, Assisted by Mika Trench, with Tech Design and Operation by Bryony Curley and an original score composed by Amelia Awan, this production leans heavily on that psychological effect, drawing out the enrapturing complexity and depth of Ibsen's text to drive home the tragedy and humanity of the characters within.

In their last two productions, the Theatre of Cowards earned national press attention and two official award nominations from Greater Manchester.
