About

The Estate Oakenshaw – Exclusive 6-Acre Retreat for Up to 16 Guests

The Estate Oakenshaw offers the rare chance to enjoy an entire private 6-acre retreat in the heart of County Durham — a place designed for unforgettable gatherings, celebrations and escapes where you truly don’t need to leave the grounds. Sleeping up to 16 guests across two beautifully crafted dwellings, with three private hot tubs, a woodland play park, peaceful grounds, and indoor entertainment including a pool table and retro arcade games, this estate brings together luxury, comfort and complete seclusion.

The estate features two distinct properties that complement one another perfectly. The Residence, an 1852 stone farmhouse, is rich in heritage with oak beams, wooden floors, characterful architecture and generous living spaces. A cosy log burner, elegant interiors and carefully curated furnishings create a warm, inviting atmosphere ideal for family time, shared meals or late-night conversations by the fire. Every bedroom offers comfort, charm and thoughtful touches that make the stay feel special.

Alongside the farmhouse is our Scandinavian-style log cabin, a modern contrast with its open-plan layout, floor-to-ceiling windows and elevated woodland views. The cabin’s contemporary design brings in light, space and serenity, with another private hot tub positioned to overlook the trees — the perfect spot for an early-morning coffee or a starlit soak. Together, these two dwellings create a unique blend of rustic heritage and modern luxury, accommodating guests comfortably across 8 sleeping zones.

Outside, the estate unfolds into landscaped gardens, nature trails, peaceful seating areas and open green spaces where you can wander, play or simply breathe in the tranquillity. Children and adults alike love the private woodland play park, complete with swings, a climbing frame and a sunken trampoline set into a soft barked surface. Sculptural features, including a turret inspired by Durham Castle, Auckland Castle and the spectacular Kynren show, add a sense of place and local history.

Entertainment is at the heart of the estate, ensuring there is genuinely no need to leave. With three hot tubs, guests can relax in total privacy, enjoying the simple pleasure of warm water, open sky and quiet surroundings. Indoors, the pool table and retro games machine offer hours of fun, making the estate ideal for birthdays, reunions, multi-generational holidays and special weekends away. Whether your group wants peaceful relaxation or lively social time, the estate gives you the freedom to shape your stay exactly as you wish.

The grounds are fully gated and secure, offering complete privacy. Wildlife, mature trees and a natural landscape create a sense of escape while still being only six miles from Durham City and Bishop Auckland. Though there are many wonderful things to do in the area, guests often find themselves choosing to stay within the estate, enjoying the space, facilities and calm surroundings. For ideas and inspiration, our Facebook page regularly features local events, attractions and updates.

The Estate Oakenshaw also provides luxury welcome touches, thoughtful hosting and ample free parking. We take pride in creating a space where guests feel looked after from the moment they arrive. Please note: strictly no pets.

To enjoy the wood-fired hot tubs, simply fill them using the hot water tap at your convenience. Once the water reaches the desired level, use the provided logs, kindling, paper, and firelighters to heat it to your preferred temperature.

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, gathering generations, or planning a peaceful rural retreat, The Estate Oakenshaw offers a setting with space, character and soul — a private world where memories are made, laughter echoes and time slows down. Book the entire estate and experience a truly unique getaway in beautiful County Durham.
