About

St John’s College is situated in the historic heart of Durham, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, just moments from the magnificent Durham Cathedral. Our College combines a collection of elegant Georgian houses with beautiful secluded gardens and lawns that stretch down to the banks of the River Wear.

During the summer vacation period, when our students are away (typically from July to September), we open our doors to guests and visitors. We offer a warm welcome, comfortable accommodation, excellent dining, and an ideal base from which to explore Durham and the surrounding countryside. Whether you are planning a conference, meeting, special event, or simply looking for bed and breakfast accommodation during your visit to Durham, our experienced team will be delighted to help with your requirements. Please get in touch at johns.conferences@durham.ac.uk.

Founded in 1909, St John’s is one of the oldest colleges of Durham University. The College buildings have a rich and fascinating history, with former residents including the widow of Dean Whittingham, translator of the Geneva Bible, as well as members of the Bowes-Lyon and Eden families. Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, was also a regular visitor.

A range of comfortable guest rooms is available, including both standard and en-suite accommodation, providing a peaceful and characterful place to stay in the heart of Durham.
