Literary illuminations on Durham Cathedral’s centuries-old architecture

About

Escape into a world of light and sound projections that bring storytelling to life. Gaze up at literary illuminations on Durham Cathedral’s centuries-old architecture at The Storytellers by Luxmuralis.

Luxmuralis returns to Durham for the fourth year – showcasing another spectacular light installation that brings stories out of the pages of their books and into reality.

See words on pages come to light, as you walk through ancient texts and become immersed in the realms of famous author’s imaginations. Explore the worlds of romance, fantasy, poetry and legends, and step back in time to see iconic children’s classics step into the spotlight.

The cathedral will also be filled with a captivating soundscape, celebrating the timeless tradition of sharing stories.

About the experience:
In an experience lasting about 45 minutes, visitors will enter the cathedral in darkness through the North Door, before journeying around the cathedral, encountering vibrant projections in different areas of the building, accompanied by an immersive soundscape.

The story unfolds into the North Nave Aisle, through the Quire, offering a moment to look at projections on the High Alter, before journeying through to the Central Nave.

The experience then includes an awe-inspiring projection in the Nave, the central aisle of the cathedral. The space will be clear of pews, and visitors can use the seating at the sides to take a moment to pause, reflect on some of the worlds best stories and literature, as the cathedral’s soaring columns are transformed by light.

As you finish the first chapter in the Nave, you will head through to the Cloisters and see the Chapter House illuminated before exiting through the Galilee Chapel, with the opportunity to light a candle which will close the book of this immersive experience.
