About

This cycle route takes you along the minor lanes across upper Weardale, a beautiful rural valley with historic villages and spectacular countryside. There are good pubs and facilities in St John’s Chapel.

From the car park ride into St John’s Chapel and head behind the town hall to the River Wear. Cross the river and after a short distance turn left, uphill and follow the minor road along the valley side. At New House, turn right, continuing up the valley before turning left, downhill just beyond Elmford Cleugh. Cross the River Wear before joining the A689 to Ireshopeburn. After the road bends left in Ireshopeburn, turn right uphill and then left as the hill flattens off. Follow this minor road across the valley side, turning left back into St John’s Chapel at the T junction.

Route provided by the North Pennines AONB Partnership.
