About

Hopetown Darlington is a major railway‑themed, and award winning, visitor attraction that celebrates Darlington’s world‑changing role in the birth of the modern railway. Opened in July 2024, it sits on the historic 1825 Stockton & Darlington Railway route, the world’s first steam‑powered public passenger railway. It blends heritage, engineering, play, and immersive experiences across a 7.5‑acre site filled with restored railway buildings, exhibitions, and interactive adventures.

Hopetown Darlington inspires future innovators by connecting them with the town’s pioneering railway story, including a vast collection of over 30,000 objects including archives, vehicles, art, costumes, ephemera and furniture showcasing the history of the railways in Darlington and the wider North East region from 1825 up to the late 20th Century.

Immediately off-site you will find Skerne Bridge, which holds the distinction of holding the title of the world's oldest railway bridge still in operation. The bridge opened in 1825 for the Stockton & Darlington Railway and has been used by passenger trains ever since.

Wagon Woods is the outdoor theme park nestled in the woods and build around railway themed play structures where younger visitors can burn off steam and run wild whilst learning about the railways.

Finally, make sure to jump aboard the ultimate railway-themed time‑travelling adventure known as Experiment! the, pulse‑racing, immersive ride like nothing you’ve ever experienced before - and the only one of its kind in the North East.
