About

The cosy and intimate Dickens Bar is a lovely place to enjoy a drink at The Morritt, whether a traditional cask ale or an aperitif before dinner.

The Dickens Bar is named after author Charles Dickens who visited Greta Bridge in 1838 to gather background information on the Yorkshire schools for “Nicholas Nickleby”, partly set in Teesdale.

The bar has the only hand painted wall mural in the world painted in the 1940s by John Gilroy, the famous Northumbrian artist best known for Guinness advertising posters. The murals cover all four walls of the bar and depict a Dickensian scene of life in the 17th century with humour and history.

The Dickens Bistro adjoins the bar, serving food and snacks throughout the day from a regularly updated menu.

A new set of murals in the bistro was commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth on February 7th, 2012.  The new murals complement the existing murals in the Dickens Bar.

Our team of chefs update the Dickens Bar & Bistro menu on a weekly basis however The Morritt Burger and other classics will always be available!
