Barrio Comida is a Taqueria serving tacos, cocktails and mezcales in the Historic City of Durham. It began as a monthly popup in summer 2015 inspired by our love of Mexican food and culture, progressing to a yearlong residency on Newcastle Quayside and eventually opening our permanent location in February 2020.
The restaurant is a modern take on the thousands of traditional taquerias dotted throughout Mexico and North America that are such a part of everyday life. Taquerias are neighbourhood hubs, a place to relax and enjoy the ritual of a few tacos with friends.
Our specially imported tortilla machine is located in the restaurants open kitchen and cooks’ tortillas from scratch throughout the day to ensure they are the freshest possible. The food is inspired by Mexico’s diverse culinary heritage while utilizing the best of British produce. We go to great lengths to source and import some of the amazing products that are the backbone of Mexican Cuisine. This includes heirloom corn from various smallholdings around Mexico, Oaxacan coffee and a large array of dried chiles from various states around Mexico. We also work very closely with our UK producers who we believe are the best in their fields, from ultra-fresh day boat fish, ethically reared grass-fed meat and produce grown with care and respect for the land.
