About

South West Durham Heritage Festival – Spennymoor Talks

Spennymoor Town Hall will host two special heritage talks on Saturday 6th September – a chance to explore the town's artistic legacy through two remarkable stories:

11.00am – Norman Cornish: His Life and Work
Hear from John Cornish, son of the celebrated artist Norman Cornish MBE, as he shares the story of his father's journey from miner to nationally recognised artist. The illustrated talk will showcase many of Norman's most iconic works and highlight the key moments in his remarkable career.

1.00pm – Tisa and the Spennymoor Settlement
Discover the story of Tisa Hess, a German Countess who came to teach art and sculpture in a Durham mining town in the 1930s. Learn how she influenced the art of the Settlement, her later return visits in the 1970s, and how her life as a Catholic nun inspired powerful works on injustice around the world.

Both talks are FREE but spaces are limited – booking essential!
