About
"Half a Sixpence" was written in 1963, with music and lyrics by David Heneker and book by Beverley Cross, as a vehicle for the British pop star Tommy Steele. The musical was based on the 1905 novel "Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul" by HG Wells. Also starring Marti Webb, the show ran in London's West End for over two years. A film version was made, also starring Tommy Steele, in 1967.
This version of the show was adapted by Warner Brown in 2007 for a large-scale UK tour starring Gary Wilmott. The familiar characters and storylines have been re-imagined for today, with some additional scenes and some new songs, all taken from David Heneker's back catalogue.
