Forest Adventures

Looking for adventure? You’ve come to the right place. From wildlife watching and dark sky gazing, to adrenaline pumping mountain biking, horse riding trails and natural play… Hamsterley Forest has it all!

Hamsterley Forest is a sprawling 2000 hectare oasis of mixed woodland in the Durham Dales, lying between the Wear and Tees Valleys on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The forest offers a range of activities and events throughout the year for all abilities and ages to enjoy.

On two feet or four, Hamsterley is waiting to be explored with a wide range of trails which will take you right into the heart of the forest, filled with spectacular views and lots of wildlife watching opportunities.

From walking through ancient oak woodland on the Bedburn Valley walk to the Riverside Gruffalo sculpture trail, there’s lots to discover and no two trails are the same. Plus all the walking trails are dog and horse friendly, making Hamsterley the perfect place to enjoy some time together with your four legged friends.

Whether you’re learning to ride or looking for your next big challenge, Hamsterley is a magnet for all things two wheeled! Throughout the forest you’ll find 33 miles of way-marked cycling and exhilarating mountain bike trails plus countless seldom travelled forest roads to test your biking skills. For the extreme end of mountain biking Danny Harts Descend Hamsterley has a number of orange graded downhill trails.

There’s lots to keep the little ones entertained, from a Gruffalo orienteering course and Highway Rat Activity Trail to bush craft sessions and wonderful fun family trails, all set along pushchair friendly routes.

The play trail offers stacks of fun for the kids including Viking wildplay, mature woodlands to explore, becks to paddle in and bucketfuls of muddy mayhem. All of which are open all year round.
