About

We are taking inspiration from our Railway Garden this Easter break, with lots of fun, nature-themed activities for families.

Get crafting by making your own mosaic, wind chimes and pollinator sticks or get creative with our writing and drawing workshop or colouring crafts.

Our Railway Garden is designed with biodiversity in mind. The hedgerows are home to hedgehogs, trees invite bats with new batboxes and our planting helps the struggling Dingy Skipper butterfly feed and breed. Come and enjoy this vibrant green space with us this Easter.

What’s on this Easter school holiday:

Butterfly activities | Every day

  • Learn more about the Dingy Skipper butterfly, and what you can do to attract butterflies to your outside space at home

  • Create your own colourful butterfly in our free mosaic art activity

Train Rides | 3–6 April

  • Available from 11.00 – 15.30, £4 per person

  • Hop on board for an authentic train ride at our museum behind our replica Rocket, visit the train rides page for more information

Make your own owl wind chime  | 7 and 14 April

  • Drop in sessions from 10.30 – 16.00

  • Fill your garden with music by making your very own owl wind chime. Local artist, Dawn Belshaw will be on hand to help and inspire your creations

Design a pollinator stick | 8–9 April

  • Drop in sessions from 10.30 – 15.30

  • Introduce pollinators to your garden by shaping and designing your very own pollinator stick with Brightwood Forest School, celebrating creativity and nature in your outdoor space

Pop-up activities | 14–17 April

Join us for exciting experiences all about the environment and sustainability perfect for curious minds of all ages. All sessions will be on a pop-up basis and spread out across the four days.

  • Create your very own quirky grass head character. Using a mix of fun materials, you’ll design a face full of personality, plant the seeds, and take it home to watch its grassy “hair” grow.

  • Help us build a bug hotel for our tiny wildlife friends! This hands-on activity lets you get creative while supporting nature, giving creepy crawlies a safe and happy place to live around the museum grounds.

  • Make a delicious treat for your local birds. Craft your own bird feeder to take home and watch the birds enjoy!

Creative writing and drawing workshop | 15–16 April

  • Drop in sessions from 11.00 – 15.30

  • Bring your ideas to life at a creative writing and drawing workshop inspired by nature corridors and planting for the future. Local artist, Lizzie Lovejoy, will guide and inspire your creativity

Flower colouring crafts | Friday 17 April

  • Drop in sessions from 10.00 – 16.00

  • Unwind with elegant flower colouring crafts and let your creativity bloom, brought to you by the S&DR 26 Mile Railway Heritage Project

    Crafts available while stocks last.
