Atchin-tan and Celebration of Gypsy Roma Traveller History at Beamish, The Living Museum of the North

Historically, during the winter months, members of the Romany Gypsy community would set up behind farms or public houses. The farmers would welcome the annual arrival of the Romany Gypsies, who would provide additional help on the farms.

Atchin-tan in Romani, the language of the Romany Gypsies, means "stopping place". Using the museum's Bow Top living wagon and our 1950s caravan Beamish will be recreating a stopping place at Spain's Field Farm.
