Castles and Cascades

Built by the Nevill family in the 14th Century, the magnificent Raby Castle is one of the finest and best-preserved medieval castles in England, set within a beautiful 200-acre deer park, with walled gardens, horse-drawn carriage collection, woodland play area, shop and newly refurbished tearooms. The Castle sits at the heart of Raby Estate, which spreads across much of the Durham Dales, and includes the spectacular High and Low Force waterfalls.

Inside and outside the castle, there’s a wealth of enthralling experiences to discover from exploring the wonderful rooms of the Castle which give a captivating glimpse of life throughout the ages through their stunning art collection, fine interiors and striking architecture to the many hidden corners of the surrounding deer park and walled gardens.

The Castle’s magical walled gardens are overflowing with plants and flowers, some of which date back over 200 years. The perfect place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful stroll exploring the many secret pathways.

The gardens are surrounded by 200 acres of lush green parkland, with walking and biking trails to follow for far-reaching views of the breath-taking grounds. A must visit for wildlife lovers, no matter what time of year you visit, you’re guaranteed to spot an abundance of wildlife throughout the park including birds of prey and the resident herds of red and fallow deer.

Situated within the Raby Estate is the majestic High and Low Force waterfalls. High Force is England’s biggest waterfalls, which spectacularly drops 70 feet into a plunge pool below, described by many as one of the most stunning waterfalls in the country.

From High Force you can follow the High Force and Bowlees Geotrail to Low Force, a 5 mile circular walk where you’ll discover ice age features, ancient settlements, mining heritage and wonderful wildlife.
