About
Route 1 from Seaham to Stockton:
The vast majority of the cycleway between Seaham and Stockton (22 miles) consists of traffic-free disused railway paths and is part of a National Cycle Network Route 1 that links Dover and the Shetland Islands mainly via the east coast of England and Scotland. The National Cycle Network includes over 13,400 miles of signed walking and cycling routes throughout the UK.
From Seaham the route heads south west behind Asda, passing Seaham Golf Course on a gradual incline towards Cold Heseldon (2 miles) where extra care should be taken crossing the A19 interchange before continuing along more traffic free paths. At South Hetton (2 miles) the route turns south passing Haswell (1 mile) where National Route 14 joins and shares the pathway until Wingate (5 miles). National Route 1 continues south past Hurworth Burn Reservoir and on through park and countryside until reaching Wynyard Woodland Park Visitor Centre (8 miles). From here there's a brief section on minor roads before rejoining traffic free paths for the final stretch into Stockton (4 miles).
The route can of course be used in sections and in either direction.
