About

Babul’s Barnard Castle: Where It All Began
Tucked away in the heart of one of County Durham’s most picturesque market towns,
Babul’s Barnard Castle is where our story started and where our love for bold South Asian
flavours found its first home.
For over 25 years, this much-loved spot has been serving locals and visitors alike with
vibrant Indian and Bangladeshi-inspired cuisine, creative cocktails, and a warm, family-run
welcome. Whether you’re exploring the castle ruins, browsing independent shops, or walking
along the River Tees, Babul’s is the perfect place to stop, relax and enjoy a proper meal
made with heart.
Our menu is inspired by the flavours of South Asia, but designed for everyone. Expect
comforting curries, aromatic biryanis, small plates packed with spice, and a wide choice of
vegetarian and vegan dishes. It’s a mix of the traditional and the unexpected—always fresh,
always full of flavour.
Visiting at the weekend? Our bottomless brunch, served every Saturday and Sunday, is a
local favourite perfect for long, lazy lunches or special get-togethers with friends. Expect
South Asian twists on classic brunch favourites, paired with free-flowing drinks and a
generous helping of Babul’s flair.
Cocktail lovers are in good hands here too. Our bar team mixes up a rotating menu of
colourful, creative drinks whether you're into something sweet and tropical or smoky and
spiced. Mocktails and alcohol-free options are just as delicious, so no one misses out.
What makes Babul’s Barnard Castle truly special, though, is the story behind it. The
restaurant was founded in 1995 by Rafique Uddin Babul, one of the early pioneers of South
Asian cuisine in the UK. His mission was to bring authentic flavours, warm hospitality, and a
sense of celebration to every table. Today, his sons proudly carry on that legacy staying
true to his roots while keeping things fresh, exciting and welcoming to all.
The space itself blends old and new, with exposed brick, colourful décor and an atmosphere
that reflects the charm of the town outside its doors. It’s the kind of place where a quick bite
can turn into a long, memorable meal whether you’re visiting from nearby or far away.
Babul’s is also proud to support the local community here in Barnard Castle. We work
closely with local organisations that bring people together, including The Witham, Barnard
Castle Cricket Club, and Barnard Castle Rugby Club. Whether it’s supporting grassroots
sport or championing the town’s cultural scene, we’re passionate about playing our part in
this brilliant community.

So whether you’re staying for the weekend or just passing through Barnard Castle, make
time for Babul’s. Come hungry. Leave happy.
