Summer is coming to Locomotion!

Join us for an action-packed summer of fun! Enjoy our sandy beach, take a train ride and get stuck into hands-on family activities as we celebrate the exciting world of engineering. Legendary locomotive Flying Scotsman will be visiting from 2 August offering steam rides and up-close experiences.

Train Rides 

All aboard! Celebrity steam engine Flying Scotsman will be running rides and experiences from 2-31 August. 

Book your Flying Scotsman tickets now.

Our of steam engine, Stephenson's Rocket replica and our Diesel 08 will also be running rides through the summer. Simply book tickets from the Welcome Desk when you arrive.

For an extra special experience you can ride on our Replica Rocket's footplate alongside the driver. Tickets are limited and must be booked in advance.

Weekly Family Activities

There's free family fun all summer long with new hands-on activities and special events happening every week. From LEGO builds and Meccano makes to racing car challenges and sculpture building, there is always something fun to join in with.

 

  • Bricks McGee | 20–26 July: Join in with engineering LEGO build challenges!
  • S&DR 26 Miles | 27 and 31 July: Make your own signal lantern or mini Locomotion No. 1 to take home.
  • Dawn Belshaw | 28 – 30 July: Work with artist Dawn Belshaw to create collaborative sculptures using recycled materials.
  • Moving Together | 30 July and 27 August (mornings only): Get moving with Silly STEM Circuits, they're fun activities to get the whole family active!
  • North East Meccano Group | 1 August: Enjoy fantastic displays of static and moving Meccano models!
  • Same Difference | 4 – 6 August: Create your own drag car to race and take home afterwards.
  • Big Science | 10 – 13 August: Witness incredible science and engineering demos.
  • Cabinet of Curiosity Studio | 18 – 20 August: Create your own paper architecture model to take home.
  • 00 Live Steam Club | 29 – 30 August: Discover miniature steam locomotives and live railway engineering in action.

 

Beach vibes

Grab your buckets and spades for seaside-style fun in the sun on our beach or stay awhile on our deck chairs where you can relax with an ice cream.

Please note: The beach closes at 16.00 and may occasionally close due to inclement weather.

 

Enjoy the museum

Locomotion is full to the brim with amazing engines that tell incredible stories. Plus, over the summer there is a special exhibition all about how engineers have shaped our world, not to be missed!
