The opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in September 1825 transformed Shildon into one of the world's first railway towns. But that was only the beginning. As Shildon grew, Shildon Works became a nationally significant centre for wagon construction, maintenance and repair, supporting industries, communities and railways across Britain. Today, its legacy continues to shape the town's identity and railway heritage.
