Hamsterley Forest

Guest blog by Deb Sharratt - My Boys Club

It may feel like our children have only just gone back to school, but with half term approaching fast here is a week of child-friendly activities in the school holidays to enjoy before the wintry weather kicks in. I know my boys would love them…

Monday

On Monday take an autumnal walk through Hamsterley Forest. The trails are well marked whether you are on two feet or two wheels. Gaze at the amazing colours of the leaves on the trees, trek along the paths to find waterfalls and streams; enjoy a hot chocolate in the café, watch your children tire themselves out in the adventure playground and even have their photograph taken with the Gruffalo – when they find him and his friends. Tuesday

On Tuesday enjoy some bewitching fun at Hardwick Park, and a stroll through this historic parkland admiring the natural beauty of the lake, woodland, and wildlife. Wizard School will last for an hour and a half - just enough time to learn how to make the perfect elder wand and potions. Follow that with a welly walk to test out the crunchy, splashy and squelchy trail around the park. Don’t forget your wellies! More info >

Wednesday

On Wednesday take a step back in time at Beamish Museum. If you haven’t been for while or even if you are a frequent visitor Beamish is always a grand day out for a family, as it tells the story of North East England in the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. There is something different on every day during half-term but if you visit on Wednesday 26 October you can join in with the dancing at the 1940s Farm with lindy hop in the farm kitchen. More info >

Thursday

On Thursday, enjoy one of Auckland Castle’s five days of exhilarating Autumn Adventures, with the chance to explore, engage with nature and try your hand at a host of exciting bushcraft skills, including den building, campfire cooking, scavenger hunts, pumpkin carving and woodland art. On Thursday there will be additional arts and craft activities inside the Castle’s 17th Century St Peter’s Chapel too. More info >

Friday

On Friday, head to the coast to beach comb and discover treasure. Sea glass, or ‘sea diamonds’ is the name given to the tiny fragments of discarded glass found along the Durham Heritage Coast that has been tumbled and smoothed by the waves. Durham’s coastline now offers a dramatic landscape with beaches, rugged cliffs and imposing headlands – perfect for a coastal walk with a treasure trove at the end for little fingers and thumbs. It’s fun, good exercise and the whole family can join in with the treasure hunt! More info >

Add something a little tasty…

We all know that hunger adversely affects a child’s behaviour so why not keep the family’s tummies happy too by taking advantage of Taste Durham Month. This is a celebration of the county's delicious food and drink, where many places to eat across the county have produced a special Durham-inspired dish featuring local produce that will get your taste buds tingling - and there are some great offers too! So that’s it. Our five days of fun in Durham and something for the weekend by My Boys Club. Even if it rains put on your waterproofs and wellies and have a splashing time!
