What Artefacts Can Tell Us about Women in the Past

Friday 13th March — 10.30am

Join Caroline Smith, Finds Liaison Assistant, for a glimpse into the everyday lives of women in the past, from prehistory to the present day.

Thanks to the thousands of artefacts found in the northeast of England and recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme’s database, we can identify, map and explore the history of female experience across the region.

This talk will examine objects used by women to earn money or help with ailments. It will also explore how women presented themselves—or were presented—at different times through their dress and jewellery, and how women were depicted on different artefacts. There will be artefacts for viewing and handling.
