Type: Castle / Fort

On this 1 acre site can be seen the excavated remains of part of a large Roman fort, built around AD80 and continuing in use for about 350 years. On display is a superb bath house with system providing under-floor heating and part of Dere Street, the Roman A1.

A small town developed around the fort where the soldiers' families lived. Parts of the site were excavated in the 1870s and again in the 1930s. Today only the excavated buildings and the earthwork remains of the northern ramparts survive above ground. However, visitors can still explore the 1,700-year-old under-floor heating of the bath house and search for the beast of Binchester. Excavations can be visited from June to August. For details of re-enactment events please visit the website or telephone. Re-enactment events may be subject to an additional charge.
