Explore Durham

Durham is an amazing county with a historic city at its heart, breathtaking dales to the west, a dramatic coastline to the east and a vale packed with amazing experiences.

Visit Durham City and admire the imposing Cathedral and Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Relax on a riverside walk or admire the views from a river cruise, or simply soak up the atmosphere at one of the many quaint coffee shops and tearooms tucked away on the city’s cobbled streets.

Step back in time in the Vale of Durham at award-winning attractions including Beamish Museum, Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, and Auckland Castle. And don’t miss Kynren – the epic open air night show that takes place in Bishop Auckland throughout the summer.

Discover breathtaking views of the Durham Dales and North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a European and UNESCO Global Geopark, seek out natural wonders and hidden gems, and experience more fascinating attractions including The Bowes Museum.

The dales are a haven for walkers and cyclists who won't want to miss Hamsterley Forest, and the market town of Barnard Castle is a haven for walkers, officially recognised as a 'Walkers are Welcome' town. Plus there's the ideal chance for a photo at High Force, one of England's most spectacular waterfalls.

And if you prefer coast to countryside, explore the dramatic views, rugged beaches and rare wildlife on the Durham Coast.
