British Sandwich Week 2020

Did you know 17 – 23 May 2020 is British Sandwich Week? A week-long celebration of the greatest food to go and quite possibly the most iconic British culinary invention, the Sandwich.

And in Durham, you’ll find all the right ingredients to make delicious sandwiches you can enjoy at home during British Sandwich Week.  
 

Pick up a butcher’s butty  

From their Durham Dales base, William Peat Butchers in Barnard Castle and Castle Bank Butchers in Stanhope are offering a regional delivery service of premium quality meat products from the best local farms. 

There’s lots of delicious cooked meats to choose from for your sandwich filling – ham, beef, pork and turkey. Or you can even pick up a tasty butcher’s sandwich including home-made ham and pease pudding, pulled pork with gravy and stuffing along with a variety of salads and coleslaws.

Garden grown garnishes 

Pick up the perfect finishing touch for your sandwiches at . Chopped garlic chives or ordinary chives go great with egg sandwiches, and you’ll find these growing in Polemonium Plantery’s nursery.

Durham’s only fully organic plant nursery and B&B offers local delivery, and is also open to visit 2-5pm daily. These garnishes can also be grown in containers at home, you can even freeze the leaves and flowers to use at a later date. 

Sweet dreams are made of cheese 

Weardale Cheese are currently offering local deliveries of their award-winning cheeses. You’ll be spoilt for choice of delicious artisan cheeses on the menu, all handmade in an old prisoner of war Camp! 

Simon – Head Cheesemaker recommends Weardale Cheese with ham and piccalilli, Brie de Weardale with apple and pickle or tasty baked Brie de Weardale and pear.

Takeaway Toasties 

The award-winning Teesdale Cheesemakers will be celebrating British Sandwich Week by launching their very own Cheese Toastie Takeaways!

Choose from mouth-watering garlic cheese & onion, Doris & onion, Teesdale Blue & Calders sillily and cured ham & Doris Cheese. 

You can pick up your toasties from 12 to 2pm Tuesday to Saturday direct from Café Cheesedale. As well as enjoying a tasty cheese toastie, you’ll be able to collect their full range of locally produced diary products, fruit, veg and other larder essentials.
