If you’re searching for a unique, family-friendly day out this summer, Locomotion’s Summer Festival in Shildon might just be your perfect destination.

The festival runs from 18 July to 31 August 2026, offering fun aplenty with train rides, a sandy beach and new family activities each week, so every visit will offer something different.

Plus with free entry and train tickets starting from £4, it is one of the best value days out in North East England.

Iconic Train Rides

All board! Take a trip on our historic track of the Stockton and Darlington railway behind one of our engines including the world-famous Flying Scotsman and our replica of Stephenson Rocket.

There are special experiences too. Would you like to ride alongside the driver of Rocket or see inside Flying Scotsman’s cab? Take this rare opportunity to make memories that will last a lifetime.

Family Fun Every Week

Throughout the festival, a rolling programme of weekly hands-on events invites children to get stuck in.

From LEGO building challenges and Meccano engineering to science demonstrations and collaborative art projects, there’s always something new to try. Special guest groups and artists also run pop-up sessions where visitors can create sculptures, race model cars or even help build giant artworks.

Seaside Vibes in Shildon

Locomotion is bringing the seaside to Shildon with a pop-up sandy beach giving a splash of seaside fun to the museum grounds. Families can relax in deckchairs, enjoy an ice cream or let the kids dig and play in the sand.

Discover the Stories Behind the Engines

Beyond the festival activities, Locomotion itself is a treasure trove of railway heritage. Home to one of the largest collections of historic rail vehicles in Europe, the museum offers a fascinating backdrop to the summer celebrations.

During your visit, you can explore exhibitions that reveal how engineering has shaped our world, from the earliest locomotives to modern innovations. It’s an inspiring reminder of the North East’s pivotal role in railway history—and why it continues to matter today.
