Durham offers an ideal summer destination with a rich calendar of events, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences. From food festivals, to the award-winning Kynren – An Epic Tale of England which marks its 10th anniversary this year. The county has an event to keep the whole family entertained this summer, we have picked a few highlights below:
The Durham Fringe Festival is back for its 5th year, offering an even bigger and better experience. Enjoy a variety of performances, including theatre, comedy, dance, live music, spoken word, and circus acts. There's fun for everyone, featuring both local and international artists from 23 to 27 July.
Magna Carta and the North at Durham Cathedral
The Magna Carta’s take centre stage at Durham Cathedral this summer. The Cathedral is fortunate to possess three issues of Magna Carta, including the only surviving 1216 issue and further engrossments from 1225 and 1300, along with three Forest Charters including one of only two surviving 1217 issues, and further issues from 1225 and 1300. Alongside the Magna Cartas being on display in the Museum, there are also artworks and interactive installations all around the cathedral, in the Galilee Chapel, Nave and Chapter House.
Kynren An Epic Tale of England
Experience the UK's ultimate live-action show, Kynren. This must-see event takes you on a journey through 2,000 years of history, myth, and legend. And new for 2025, Kynren celebrates the 200th anniversary of Locomotion No.1, the first passenger steam train. A stunning full-scale replica will feature in the performance, bringing the story to life with performances every Saturday until 13 September.
Enjoy a weekend of fantastic food and family fun down by the sea at the Seaham Food Festival. With a great selection of artisan traders, street food, bars and attractions, alongside an amazing celebrity chef line up on 2-3 August. The weekend will include two star bakers, popular television presenters and the BBC MasterChef Champion of Champions.
S&DR200 Summer Celebration Festival at Locomotion
Celebrate 200 years of the modern railway at Locomotion's Summer Celebration in Shildon from 19 July to 31 August. Enjoy train rides, railway legends, and beach vibes. On selected days, ride replicas of Stephenson's Rocket or the Flying Scotsman along the historic Stockton and Darlington Railway line. From 28–31 August, explore the Flying Scotsman on static display and see its technology up close for free.
The Hardwick Festival is back for its 11th year. This three day event attracts visitors from across the UK. Enjoy multiple stages featuring international headliners like Scissor Sisters, Pet Shop Boys, and Olly Murs. This family-friendly festival ensures fun for everyone and will be running from 15 to 17 August.
Durham's City Centre will host a fun-filled family day with over a hundred classic cars will be on display at Market Place, Palace Green, and Framwellgate and Elvet Bridges on 25 August. Discover and admire cars from around the world, chat with owners, and snap photos of your favourites.
S&DR200 Anniversary Journey 1825-2025: Shildon, Darlington and Stockton
A renovated replica of Locomotion No. 1, the passenger carriage 'Experiment', and coal waggons will run on parts of the original S&DR line from 26-28 September. Spectators can see the train at specific locations and enjoy special events along the route.
Chester-le-EATS promises exciting cuisine, music, and family fun on 27-28 September. This free event is dog-friendly and hosted by Durham Cricket to celebrate local culture and foster community engagement. Chester-le-EATS newcomers include Pablo Eggsgobao and Chicken Ting, with returning festival favourites like Spud Gun Loaded Fries, Redheads Mac 'N' Cheese, Voodoo Pizza, Kolamba, and The Little Poffertje Pancake Shack offering diverse foods from Sri Lankan to Dutch treats.
