The Orangery Rockliffe Hall

We’re launching Taste Durham Month in some style with the fantastic news that the critically-acclaimed Orangery restaurant at Rockliffe Hall has just been awarded four coveted AA Rosettes, making it the only hotel, golf and spa resort in England to hold such an accolade.

It makes for an appetising start to Taste Durham Month, an annual event which runs throughout October, when we celebrate the diversity of the county’s food and drink with opportunities to enjoy award-winning foodie experiences and savour the best of local produce.

This latest dining accolade enhances the delicious array of foodie experiences already on offer county-wide, with everything from cafes and gastro-pubs to fine dining and farm shops in addition to gourmet treats at the stunning two Michelin-starred Raby Hunt.

For five-star Rockliffe Hall their four AA Rosettes award is another prize to add to a clutch of accolades secured by the luxury hotel.

The AA Hospitality Awards celebrate the best of British hospitality. Now in its 20th year, the awards ceremony celebrates the UK’s top hotels, restaurants, and pubs and the people behind them.

The Orangery’s executive chef, Richard Allen, and his team, collected the prize at a glittering ceremony in London.

Only ten restaurants in the UK were awarded four new Rosettes at the event. The long-established Rosette scheme recognises successful cooking at different levels across the UK. Only 10pc of restaurants nationwide are of a standard that is worthy of one Rosette or above.

Richard Allen is no stranger to recognition for his exceptional food. In 2011 he achieved a Michelin Star while working as executive chef at the Tassili restaurant in the 5* Grand Jersey Hotel which he held until he left to join Rockliffe Hall in January 2015.

Richard has also held three AA Rosettes for nine years and has two of the highest industry accolades to his name - the Cateys’ Head Chef of the Year 2012 and the Craft Guild of Chefs’ Restaurant Chef of the Year 2012.

Originally from Poole in Dorset, Richard relocated from Jersey to the North East with his wife and two sons to join Rockliffe, taking the helm in The Orangery and also working with the teams in the resort’s other two restaurants, The Clubhouse and the Spa Brasserie.
