One of the North East's largest food festivals has announced a record number of exhibitors for 2011, according to organisers Durham County Council.

A total of 128 exhibitors have already signed up for the annual Bishop Auckland Food Festival which takes place in the scenic grounds of Auckland Castle on 16 April.

Visitors to the festival can expect to find the finest local food producers from across Durham and North East England selling their goods. Stall holders range from Burtree House Farm, famed for national award winning puddings, to Durham Venison and Game and its game sausages and burgers.

There is also a range of entertainment for visitors from children’s theatre to classical musicians and dance groups.

Almost 30,000 people attended the event last year. Organisers are expecting a similar number of visitors this year.

Beryl Anderson, the council's events officer, said: "Each year, we seem to attract more visitors and, judging by the amount of interest so far, this year looks set to be no different."

Other nearby visitor attractions include Binchester Roman Fort, the best preserved Roman military bathhouse in Britain, Escomb Saxon Church which dates back to the 7th century and Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon.

Visitors can pick up a town map of Bishop Auckland at tourist information centres in Durham City and Stanhope and at hotels, guesthouses, retail outlets and visitor attractions in the area.
