Lumiere, Durham’s winter festival of light, is to return to the city again this November, organisers have confirmed.
Lumiere, which debuted in Durham in November 2009, attracted more than 75,000 people over three nights and included a spectacular ‘son et lumiere’ light show, called ‘Crown of Light,’ projected onto the front wall of Durham Cathedral.
Arts production company Artichoke has confirmed that Lumiere will take place from November 17 to 20 and have promised to stop people in their tracks with some of the world’s most exciting and innovative light installations.
Buildings, bridges, rooftops, shop windows and major attractions will be lit up and the city turned into a living canvas of light and sound by international and North East based artists.
Lumiere 2011 has been commissioned by Durham County Council and is being supported by Arts Council England.
Durham County Council leader Simon Henig, said: “At Lumiere 2009 we witnessed first-hand how culture can touch people’s lives in the most remarkable way, with residents and visitors enjoying spectacular displays.”
The full programme for Lumiere will be revealed in the summer along with more information for the public about visiting Durham for the festival.
www.thisisdurham.com will carry new information on the festival as soon as it available.
