There are only four days left until Durham’s historic city streets come to life.

Durham’s Streets Of… series of free Summer festivals are set to fill the streets with buskers, acrobats, street performers, dancers and musicians this August Bank Holiday weekend (28-30).

The series of three free festivals includes The Streets of Play (August 28), Durham’s international buskers festival, The Streets of Folk, (August 29) an eclectic mix of the best, contemporary folk music from around the world, and The Streets of Dance, (August 30) a participatory celebration of dance in all forms.

Kate James, festival organiser, said: “Audiences can expect a hugely exciting and free entertainment spectacle over three days in Durham this August. The city’s streets and main squares are ideal places for people to gather and enjoy world class street entertainment and what's more it's still all free.”

The festivals open with the Streets of Play when buskers, acrobats, jugglers and daredevils wow the crowds with agility, stunts, skills and nerve. Festival goers are encouraged to reward buskers performances by dropping money into the hat as acknowledgement that street performance is their profession.

Highlights this year include Glastonbury favourite Betty Brawn, an Australian Strongwoman, and The Black Eagles an acrobatic troupe from Tanzania who combine uplifting dance with African music and daredevil acrobatics.

A highlight of the festivals takes place on August 29 when Scottish folk supergroup The Peatbog Faeries headline the main stage of Streets of Folk combining high octane dance with traditional Celtic jigs and reels.

The Streets of Dance on Monday August 30 heralds a return of the curious spectacle of the ‘Quiet Riot’. People are encouraged to bring their own music on an IPOD or MP3 player and silently dance in the streets with hundreds of fellow music lovers. Later that afternoon, dance groups can compete for the title of Durham Streets of Dance Champions 2010 in the festival closing ‘Dance Off’.
