Musicians from around the world are polishing their instruments in anticipation of Britain’s biggest brass music festival in Durham this summer.

BRASS: Durham International Festival is back for its fourth year and Durham’s historic cobbled city streets and charming market towns are set to throb to the sound of music as stylistically diverse as funk, reggae, ska and tango, alongside traditional brass bands celebrating North East England’s coal mining past.

The festival runs from July 3-18 and will showcase a powerful programme of global artists from more than 20 countries including the USA, Japan, Spain, New Zealand, Switzerland, Benin and Germany.

Craig Wilson of Visit County Durham, said: “BRASS is a highlight of Durham’s annual calendar of cultural events and is a great time to experience Durham in a completely new way.

The festival has roots in the brass playing traditions of our region’s mining communities but now celebrates and attracts the very best brass playing musicians from across the world, making Durham the home of a truly international music and entertainment spectacle.”

Gigging in ancient streets
One of the most anticipated dates in the festival is the Streets of Brass when artists take to the streets to play free, impromptu gigs in Durham City and towns across the county.

Market squares and busy high streets become the scene of jamming sessions with visitors and residents stopping to dance in the streets and get down to the deep, soulful sound of brass music. The full festival programme is available at www.brassfestival.co.uk and videos of BRASS from previous festivals are free to view on YouTube.

BRASS is a great time to take a city break in Durham with a host of great value deals on offer for weekend stays and short breaks.
