What's on in Durham this Halloween

With more than 60 ghosts rumored to inhabit its historic city, grand castles and splendid manor houses, Durham is one of the most haunted places to visit in Britain this weekend.

If you wish to truly scare yourself, break out alone or with friends and choose to visit one of the places on Durham’s Top-10 Ghosts and Legends list, just log onto www.thisisdurham.com/toptens to learn about Lily of Lumley or the Grey Lady of Durham Castle.

If you’d prefer to be scared witless in the company of others then think about one of the many Halloween themed events taking place over half term and Halloween weekend.

Vale of Durham

Beamish Museum
The Edwardian Town at Beamish Museum, the “Living Museum of the North” is open on Friday and Saturday, 29th & 30th October from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, and will be packed full of witches, bogeymen, headless horsemen and ghost trains.

Entry to Halloween at Beamish is by pre-purchased ticket only. Tickets for these fun packed evenings, on sale from Tuesday, 31st August, are limited.  Charges are £10 for adults and £7 for children (3 to 16 years, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).Call 0191 370 4000 to book.

Durham Coast
Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve is one of County Durham’s ‘most haunted’ beauty spots, full of forest trails, wild woodland and snaking streams.

Join the ranger team for a free spooky walk and discover the legend of the Devil’s Lapstone. Entry from 6:00pm, last admission at 7:15pm.  For further details call (0191) 5860004. Meet at the NNR’s Oakerside Dene Lodge, Stanhope Chase, Peterlee, SR8 1NJ.

Warm soup served on return to the reserve centre after the walk.  Wear sturdy footwear and bring a torch or lantern.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.  Not suitable for pushchairs due to natural gradients.

Durham Dales

Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Durham Dales
The treasure house of fine European and decorative art is hosting a week of spooky Halloween themed events this half term. You can accompany a storyteller telling ghostly tales in the grounds, create a withie lantern or skull mask and join in a lantern parade. Log onto: www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk, 01833 690606.

Durham City
The medieval manor house and English country gardens of Crook Hall in Durham City is rumoured to be haunted by the White Lady and the victim of a murderous soldier. From October 29-31 (3pm to dusk) visitors can meet the Wicked Witch and try and spot the White Lady. Pre booking essential. Tickets are £6.00 Adults, £5.50 Concessions and £5.00 children.
