Splash, the extraordinary waterfall made by Canadian artist Peter Lewis, and one of the highlights of this year's LUMIERE Festival in Durham, will appear on the Olympic Park next year.

The spectacularly lit waterfall captivated tens of thousands of visitors to the second edition of LUMIERE, Durham’s biennial light festival. First estimates put the number of visitors at around 140,000 attending the festival over four nights in November.

LUMIERE 2011 has doubled in size since its first outing in 2009, with 35 different art installations spread over a much greater area of the city beyond the peninsula.

Visitors from all over the world flocked to the festival to see artworks made by British and international artists, including French company Carabosse with their awe-inspiring fire installation inside and around Durham Cathedral, and Canadian artist Peter Lewis whose illuminated waterfall over Kingsgate high level footbridge captivated visitors viewing from Elvet Bridge. Festival visitors rediscovered little-known or un-noticed churches, buildings, parks and riverways, as they followed the trail to artworks by Tracey Emin, Simeon Nelson, Claire Fontaine and Martin Creed, amongst others.

The farther-flung streets and parks of the city were reclaimed for the night as people walked the city to see Boo Beaumont's beautiful film projected onto North Road Methodist Church, Dorota Kraft's psychedelic dancefloor in Wharton Park, and Ron Haselden's delightful naïve light sculptures, based on drawings made by schoolchildren.

Produced by leading creative company, Artichoke, the festival is the largest in the UK, and is supported by Durham County Council, along with Arts Council Englandand a raft of sponsors and funding bodies.

Artichoke has been working with the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and, subject to planning permission, the company will produce Lewis's vast waterfall on the park for all to see during the Games in 2012.
