Durham Book Festival 2011, with over 60 events, and books on all subjects, offers something for everyone. The festival brings a wide range of authors to the City this autumn who will be participating in a variety of events including debates, readings, conversations and events featuring music.
This year’s Durham Book Festival takes place from 17-23 October and during the main festival week Durham will welcome prominent thinkers and leaders from the fields of politics, history, science and the military to talk about issues affecting us all, including: David Miliband, Alistair Darling, Chris Mullinand, Bob Marshall Andrews, General Lord Richard Dannatt and Sir Rodric Braithwaite who will talk about the unwinnablewars in Afghanistan. The festival will also present the reading of a new play, Wounded, by North East writer Carina Rodney.
Leading scientist Richard Dawkins will introduce children to the mysteries of the universe, comedian Marcus Brigstocke will reflect on issues of faith and Jon Ronson will be questioning what it is to be normal.
The festival is also not shying away from international issues with an event about the Arab Spring with visiting Egyptian novelists and a celebration of thefundamental freedom to write in association with English PEN, the organisationthat supports freedom of speech across the world, with novelist Pat Barker andpoet Jean Binta Breeze rallying for the cause.

Durham Book Festival is 21 years old this year and is the North East’s biggestannual celebration of books and ideas. The festival is supported by partnershipswith Durham Cathedral and Durham University. The festival is programmed andproduced by New Writing North, the writing development agency for the North East, in association with Durham County Council.
