Kirkcarrion, Teesdale
is easily identified overlooking the town and is a very atmospheric spot. Within the copse is an area where, even in the wildest of weather, it is said the wind never blows. The mound of earth and stones is a historical spot, that archaeologists would call a tumulus, which marks the site of a Bronze Age round barrow burial site.
Mystery surrounds the site. Some say it is the grave of a Brigantian Chieftain called Caryn, whose ashes were carried by his grieving followers in solemn dignity to the remote hill top for burial.
A stone cairn was raised to mark his last resting place and the Welsh-Celtic words ‘Carreg Caryn’ meaning ‘Caryn’s burial heap’ bestowed on the site from whence came the site’s present name.
According to local legend a visit to that burial site is to stand alongside the ghost of Caryn himself.
