About
Cockfield Fell is England’s largest scheduled Ancient Monument and evidence of its agricultural and industrial past pockmark its rough grassland landscape. Begin in Staindrop village and follow the B6279 towards Eggleston. After approx. 2.5 miles take right turn north to Copley and the little known Gaunless Valley. Seek out the partly hidden Copley Lead Mill chimney, a striking reminder of the valley’s former industrial activity.
Return to Copley and continue on the B6282 to The Slack. The next part of the ride circles the ever fascinating Cockfield Fell where myriad lumps and bumps in the landscape provide evidence for some of the earliest coal mining workings in the country.
At The Slack continue ahead on B6282 (towards Toft Hill) but at next junction turn right for Esperley and Cockfield passing through High Lands and Low Lands. At next crossroads turn right again to cycle Cockfield’s main street. Choose your route back to the A688 to return to Staindrop.
