After making its debut as a brand new festival last year, Balloons InDurham returns to the skies of Durham City from 25th - 28th May 2018 thanks to Durham BID. Set to be bigger and better than ever before, with live entertainment, arts and crafts and kite flying added to the programme too!

Balloons in Durham

Balloons InDurham 2018 will reach for the skies with an evening mass balloon launch from East Durham College’s Houghall Campus on Friday 25th May between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

On Saturday 26th May and Sunday 27th May, at both Houghall Campus and The Sands, on the banks of the River Wear in Durham City. There will be fun-filled family-friendly activities for all to enjoy, including hot air balloon demonstrations, kite flying and live entertainment, giving the whole event a festival-feel.

On the evening of Saturday 26th May, the day’s activities will culminate in a stunning balloon glow at Houghall Campus between 9.30pm and 10.15pm. It will feature up to 18 hot air balloons inflating and lighting the envelopes of the balloons with flaming burners in time to a sound track, that is bound to have everyone tapping their feet to the tunes, while gazing in awe at the beauty of the balloons.

Finally, the event will finish on Monday 28th May at Houghall Campus with one final early morning launch between 6.30am and 7.30am, before the hot air balloons float off across the City skyline, marking the end of Balloons InDurham for another year.

Balloons in Durham

The Balloons InDurham programme is very much weather dependent with some elements potentially being rescheduled at last minute for health and safety purposes.  Weather conditions and air pressures need to be very exact and so the decision for a balloon launch to take place will ultimately be made by the flight director for the benefit of all.
