Gruffalo app

Families can step into a whole new world at Hamsterley Forest in the Durham Dales this half term using a brand new virtual reality app!

Follow the clues and search for signs along the forest's new interactive trail - then use the The Gruffalo Spotter app to point your phone’s camera at footprint markers and watch Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake, and the Gruffalo appear in the forest right before your eyes.

The new app is an augmented reality app designed for exclusive use on Gruffalo Spotters trails at Hamsterley and 25 other Forestry Commission sites across England.

The self-led trails are packed with fun facts about forest animals with fantastic activities along the way. Once families have spotted the characters, they can use the app to bring the 3D character animation to life and take photos alongside them.

The Gruffalo Spotters app is free and requires downloading before your visit. You can download it here.

When can I do it?

The trail is open from the 23rd February 2017. It is aimed at younger children, but the whole family can enjoy following clues and collecting evidence.

Who is it aimed at?

It is aimed at younger children, but the whole family can enjoy following clues and collecting evidence. You can find the start of the trail at the Visitor Centre, and it is about 1.5 miles in length.

How does it work?

  • First of all, download the Gruffalo Spotters app to your phone before you visit!
  • Pick up an activity kit at the visitor centre/cafe.
  • Once at the forest clues will lead to five different footprint markers for each one of the characters from the book including the unmistakable footprint of the gruffalo!
  • When you spot the markers point your phone's camera at them, using the app to bring the characters to life.

Thanks to augmented reality technology, the characters will appear to blend in within the forest around you!

What’s in the Activity Kit?

Available for £3 from the café/visitor centre at Hamsterley Forest.

Inside you'll find:

  • An evidence collection bag
  • 5 animal activity and facts cards
  • A Spotter's Guide
  • Stickers of The Gruffalo characters
  • A special magnifying glass, ruler and a pencil.

Watch the video and then visit the Forestry Commission's Grufalo website for more details.
