Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 local people and organisations, and thousands of volunteers. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.

- Heritage Open Days - Wheatley Hill Heritage CentreWheatley Heritage centre is situated in the cemetery and was originally used as a chapel of rest. It was opened by Miners’ Leader, Peter Lee in 1907 and was used to hold funerals until the late 1950’s.

- Heritage Open Days - Church of our Lady of Mercy and St. GodricBetween the train and the bus stations, a landmark in the Durham City Conservation Area, St. Godric's Grade II listed church was designed by Edward Pugin. Opened in 1864 it has beautiful examples of Victorian stained glass and a fine high altar.
