Mining Art Gallery on The Way of Life
The Way of Life is a journey through healing waters, one of England's oldest churches, and a grand castle once home to Prince Bishops, where St Cuthbert's miracles happened. While walking the trail why not explore the Mining Art Gallery's special exhibition, Fuelling the Railway Revolution, to explore the link between coal mining and railways, which is running until December. Learn how coal mining powered railway development, iron production, and the transportation of coal in the Great Northern Coalfield. Discover this story through the eyes of artists who witnessed these changes and those inspired by them.
National Glass Centre on The Way of Learning
Explore The Way of Learning, following England's original scholar, the Venerable Bede, and uncover the North East's legacy of industry and innovation. As you walk the trail, don't miss the Three Artists exhibition at the National Glass Centre, featuring Zac Weinberg's creative constructions, Joanna Manousis's mirrored and cast glass, and Anthony Amoako-Attah's works inspired by Ghanaian textiles. See their internationally acclaimed art all in one place until January 2026.
Ushaw Historic House, Chapels and Gardens on The Way of Light
Discover an incredible trail that takes you from early Christianity through historic battles and majestic abbeys, to a stunning seminary. While on the route, explore the Treasures of Ushaw: A Library Experience. This 90-minute event on 12 September lets you dive into Ushaw's rich literary heritage. Enjoy special access to the magnificent Big Library, designed by Joseph Hansom, and view up to 20 rare books and archival treasures, each with a unique story.
National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool on The Way of Love
The Way of Love explores how St Hilda, St Helena, and St Mary Magdalene shaped Christianity in England, while showcasing maritime and mining heritage, nature reserves, and iconic denes. Why not explore The Way of Love trail from 6 to 7 September where you can discover Sailors & Suitors: A Jane Austen Regency Weekend to celebrate 250 years of Jane Austen at the national Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool. Dive into Austen's naval ties with hands-on activities, displays, and talks. Learn the value of storytelling to capture women's voices, including Eliza Bunt's diary from her time aboard HMS Trincomalee.
Bamburgh Castle on The Way of the Sea
Embark on the Way of the Sea trail, a journey that combines two epic paths along stunning coastlines, crags, castles, and standout churches from Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral. Visit Bamburgh Castle until 2 November 2025 to step into the real Last Kingdom of Bebbanburg.
