Enjoy nostalgic activities, fresh air and good times for little and large adventurers alike. The outdoor park will come alive with nature‑inspired fun, creative challenges and wholesome camp vibes, all led by the Camp Counsellor, Cathy. Throughout August, families can dive into camp crafts, team‑building games and outdoor challenges that bring the magic of summer camp right to Dalton Park. Running until 29 August.
Derwent Waterside Park will come to life with tunes, tributes and twilight skies from 14 to 15 August with the return of Derwent Fest. The festival takes place over two days and attendees are invited to make the most of the weekend by camping under the stars in a designated Dark Skies location, to enjoy the tranquillity and relaxation that comes from staying in the countryside.
Victory Over the Sun: Encounters with Light at The Light
This major exhibition brings together groundbreaking works by a diverse group of international artists who explore light in innovative and unexpected ways. Opening 22 August, this spectacular international light art exhibition will be forming part of the opening of County Durham’s new culture venue - The Light. Featuring artists such as Maarten Baas, Yto Barrada, Tine Bech, Chila Burman, James Clar, Shezad Dawood, Olafur Eliasson and Tracey Emin.
Durham City Centre will host a fun-filled family day with over a hundred classic cars on display at the Market Place, Palace Green, and Framwellgate and Elvet Bridges on 31 August. Discover and admire cars from around the world, chat with owners, and even snap photos of your favourites.

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 local people and organisations, and thousands of volunteers. From 11 to 20 September venues across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences, plus it’s all free.
Chester-le-EATS returns for its milestone fifth anniversary in 2026, and this year promises to be the biggest celebration yet from 26 to 27 September. Durham Folk Festival arrives from 18 to 20 September, bringing three days of live music, dance, workshops, family activities and free events. With more than 100 performances across the city, the festival celebrates folk, roots and traditional music in Durham’s iconic venues and riverside setting.
The City of Durham Show returns on 13 September to celebrate local produce, craft, and community. Durham gardeners, crafters, and bakers are urged to come together at Durham Town Hall and celebrate the return of this much-loved event, being revived by a group of residents.
