This exhibition is designed to commemorate the 40 year anniversary of the start of the year-long Miners' Strike March 1984-1985 in which women played a crucial role. The legacy of mining in our region has been widely acknowledged in public art works, but very little credit has been given to the women who helped sustain mining communities over the lifetime of the mining industry, and who have been crucial to community survival in the years since closure of the industry.
The exhibition has been organised in conjunction with National Women Against Pit closures who are organising a one-day commemorative event in Durham to be followed by other events elsewhere in the country during 2024.
