Stockton and Darlington Railway 200th Anniversary
The Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) opened on 27 September 1825, connecting places, people, communities and ideas, and its impact transformed the world.
To mark the 200th anniversary of the opening, Darlington, Durham and Stockton-on-Tees Councils, with the Tees Valley Authority have joined together with a range of local, national and international partners to bring you a year-long programme of celebration throughout 2025.
Right here, in North East England, people created the first successful locomotive powered public railway and changed the way the world trades, travels and communicates.
The railways have become a part of popular culture and day-to-day life for many people across the world. This connection will be celebrated during the S&DR Festival which will include special steam train journeys, innovative exhibitions, visual arts and large-scale outdoor spectacles.
