This ever-popular orchestra returns to the glorious surroundings of Durham Cathedral for the first concert of its 2019-20 season, with an exciting programme of music.
Conducted by Philippe Bach, Musical Director of the prestigious Meiningen Opera, Orchestra North East performs:
Wagner: Overture to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Elgar: Variations on an Original Theme, op 36, “Enigma Variations”
Rachmaninov: Symphony no.3 in A Minor, op. 44
With its full orchestral sound, Wagner’s overture, The Mastersingers of Nuremberg is a rousing concert-opener that features stately and lyrical themes from Wagner’s only comedy opera.
One of Elgar’s most popular and enduring works, the Enigma Variations, display an inventive range of moods in the depictions of the composer’s friends in variations on an original theme.
Rachmaninov’s Third Symphony is one of his later compositions and is, arguably, a hidden gem of a symphony. Perhaps less familiar than his first two symphonies, it is nonetheless expressive and powerfully emotional, and its inventive exploration of orchestral colours is as delightful as it is masterful.
