Digging Deeper at Binchester Roman Fort

Join Durham County Council's Principal Archaeologist, Dr David Mason, to hear about the fascinating finds made during recent archaeological digs at Binchester Roman Fort.
Hailed as 'the Pompeii of the North', Binchester Roman Fort and the civilian settlement which surrounded it are potentially one of the most significant archaeological sites in the country. Excavations led by Durham University and Durham County Council exposed remarkable remains to the south-east of the fort between 2009 and 2017, and in 2018 and 2019 a team of archaeologists from Durham County Council, Northern Archaeological Associates and The Auckland Project have been working to understand the north-east side of the fort. This talk presents some of the results from these digs, and explains the ongoing work to reveal more of this hugely significant archaeological site.
