About
Carricks is the perfect place for a family picnic. It has an area of flat open grass where children can run around until they tire. They may however share their play area with the many rabbits and moles which live and feed here.
A shallow section of the River Derwent runs alongside the site and often has dipper, mallard and goosander on it. Look for the blue flash of a kingfisher as it dives into the water to catch a fish. Listen for the woodpecker drumming in trees behind. Osprey, buzzard and red kite are occasionally seen flying overhead.
Carricks is a good starting point for walks. Both Baybridge picnic area and the pretty village of Blanchland are within walking distance along an attractive riverside path. Pow Hill Country Park, with its special wildlife and wonderful views over the Derwent reservoir, is only a few miles away.
