Take a Step Back in Time

Are you ready for a historical adventure you will never forget? In Durham, we not only preserve our heritage, we bring it to life in unique and magical ways. From award-winning attractions and amazing art galleries to the breathtaking outdoor spectacle that is Kynren, An Epic Tale of England – get set to experience the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of times gone by.

• Hop on a tram for a whistlestop tour through time at Beamish, The Living Museum of the North. Say hello to the Land Girls at the 1940s Farm, indulge your sweet tooth at the Edwardian bakery, go back to school in the Pit Village and explore the 1950s Town.

• Discover the incredible attractions of The Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland, including the majestic Auckland Castle. Home to the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham for centuries, get set for stunning Gothic staterooms, 17th century Spanish paintings and one of the largest private chapels in Europe.

• Enjoy stunning views of the Durham Dales as you take a ride on the Weardale Railway, an 18 mile heritage line that was once part of the world-famous Stockton to Darlington Railway.

• Watch history unfold before your eyes at Kynren, An Epic Tale of England. The only show of its kind in the UK, this dazzling outdoor performance sees a 1,000-strong cast and crew take audiences on a spellbinding journey through 2,000 years of history, myth and legend.
